- William Holman, author of A Gay History,  Lest It Be Forgotten [1971]

“Our only guide to the future is our past and if we do not preserve the record of our living gay community, who will?”

HISTORY NEEDS TO BE SEEN AS IT WAS,

NOT HOW WE WISH IT TO BE REMEMBERED.

Each new generation has to learn about the past ones differently than the ‘straight community’ as for most, there were no children to pass the history down to or it was hidden for fear of reprisal, loss of work, or life. That is why this website is important and hopefully helps those understand what happened in the past to help fuel their work in the future. Donnie/Don Horn – historian, author, playwright, humanitarian, director, producer, documentarian, founder of triangle productions! and The Umbrella Project

MISSION STATEMENT

Engaging others in the preservation and protection of LGBTQ history in Oregon from the beginning of the territory until the present day. This project seeks to include the Native American communities and their acknowledgment of gender roles. It has been stated that they believe that people who had both female and male characteristics were viewed as gifted by nature, and therefore, “able to see both sides of everything.”

Ensuring that everyone who has knowledge of this history or that has been involved in this history deserves to be recognized, either by their contributions or involvement in or with the LGBTQ community. Understanding what happened in the past, how it affected lives, and how it can be honored is at the forefront in this work. Preservation of history is valuable for the whole community.  Asking the question: ‘What are the impacts/aspects of LGBTQ in Oregon?’

NOT ALL ARE DONE WITH MUCH THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDED. IT IS TIME-CONSUMING AND A LOT OF WORK. WE’RE GETTING THERE!

After several years of research, Donnie/Donald Horn Executive Director of triangle productions! enlisted Uber talented Kate Dessin to design and with help from Sherry Okamura this website is now a reality.

It is not done, there is alot of information that still needs to be placed on the site and much more to be gathered but here we are, the detailed LGBTQ history of Portland which in the months and years to come will as much of Oregon’s LGBTQ history as we can.
