Transsexual Mayoral Candidate Tells Yountville: ‘Change Will Do You Good’
YOUNTVILLE, Calif. —
Things have been pretty lively around the veterans home since Terri Pohrman, a transsexual Brigitte Nielsen-look-alike, starting running for mayor in tights under the banner “The Change Will Do You Good.”
The former Las Vegas showgirl was a regular entertainer at the California Veterans’ Home before she entered the race, but the stakes have gone up because more than 700 of the 1,800 registered voters in this wine country town live there.
The big-shouldered blonde with spiky hair faces two opponents in the April 10 election. She wants an additional 500 residents of the home to register to vote. In the 1988 Yountville elections, only 535 people bothered to vote.
Born in Portland, Oregon. Upon graduation decided that they wanted to be true to themselves and had a sex change male to female. Terri worked at Darcelle XV Showplace as a female impersonator. Walter W Cole who owned Darcelle XV Showplace opened Old Town Florist and Miss Terri was a great floral designer as well other venues in Portland. Walter stated in his book, Looking from the mirror, “She had been working at the club for several years, and in fact, she was the one that was in the loft space when we had the New Year’s Eve fire. Well, I believed that she had the talent to do it, so she went down to Reno and found a space at the Sundowner Hotel and Casino. I had extra sound equipment – speakers, chords, mixer board the like and some lights. Terri begged to let her use my name as an ‘entrance’ into the Reno community. I guess I had a name and after spending $500 (good money back then) a new sign was erected outside the Sundowner. The space was on the second floor, and it was named for better or worse, “The 2nd Floor Cabaret”. It closed within a short period of time and Terri moved to Las Vegas where they performed as showgirl.
At the age of 37 Terri ran for mayor in a Napa Valley town of Yountville, California, with the slogan, "The Change Will Do You Good." though defeated did not stop participating within the community.
In Apr 22, 2022 Updated Sep 6, 202 it was reported in the Napa Valley Register a headline that read: Longtime Napa Valley resident "Miss Terri" faces rare brain disease. “Miss Terri, a longtime Napa Valley business owner and advocate. This past November Miss Terri was forced to stop working after being diagnosed with Cellular Ataxia. A friend Alan Wellman has started a GoFundMe campaign to help with her medical care and other costs. Miss Terri is known for her work in the community and her hair and wig salon. Her driver’s license and passport officially identify her as “Terri Pohrman” but to anyone who has met this former Napan and small business owner, she’s simply known as Miss Terri.
