SCANDALS

Scandals is the most middle-of-the road bar on the strip, not subscribing to any particular theme, and promoting a comfortable drinking atmosphere. They've got plenty of places to sit, a good-looking crowd, and televisions broadcasting gay-themed videos in case the person sitting across from you is boring as shit. Over the weekend they'll be selling Stoli drinks with proceeds going to Cascade AIDS Project, while proceeds from the entire "Taking Pride in Stark" event go to the GLBT community center Q Center as well as CAP. https://www.portlandmercury.com/food/vaseline-alley/Content?oid=

Portland recently lost one of its gay community leaders. Glenn Dugger was the original owner of Scandals, the bar he opened in 1970. He started the bar, one of three that he opened with $500. It became a place that people with no other place to go could call home, which is what he wanted it to be.

Dugger died March 12. He was 76. He is survived by his partner Felipe Ramirez.

Moved to: 1125 SW Harvey Milk St in 2015. [SW Stark Street was renamed Harvey Milk 2018] Great downtown space, fun events, and nice front outdoor patio. formerly occupied by Three Sisters Tavern, the space now houses Scandals, a gay bar. 276 For the purposes of this study businesses are considered “gay-oriented” if they a) self identify as gay

bars in advertisements. For example, the landing page of Scandals’ website says “Scandals exists as one of Portland’s most established gay bars since 1979.” (http://scandalspdx.com/). Businesses were also included if they participated actively in sexual minority culture. The Roxy Diner, for example, hosts drag shows and is owned by the partner of a well-known gay activist and drag performer. The Roxy is also listed as gay-oriented in Gay Travel Guides (http://portland.gaycities.com/restaurants/). Businesses are also considered gay-oriented if they were identified in the Gay & Lesbian Archives Historic Walking Tour as gay. Cited per Portland Archives and Records.
