SAUCE BOX
Per the book Secret Portland – The Unique Guidebook to Portland’s Hidden Sites, Sounds, & Tastes published in 2003 & 2010 by Ann Carroll Burgess and Tom Burgess they state on page 75 under SECRET Club Scene, “Saucebox is another of the city’s currently popular places to be seen. This downtown restaurant/club is a large, dramatically lit dark box that can be extremely noisy. So if you plan to have any significant conversations make sure you do so before 10 PM, when the DJ arrives to turn the restaurant into a dance club.
Per Saucebox Wikipedia page: Saucebox was an Asian fusion restaurant and bar in Portland, Oregon.[1] Restaurateur Bruce Carey and chef Chris Israel opened Saucebox in 1995.

Restaurateur Bruce Carey’s downtown cocktail bar Saucebox has closed after 25 years of service. The late-night spot was marked with controversy in August when a former server filed a lawsuit against the business, co-owner, and certain employees for alleged racial discrimination and harassment. Carey has not responded to requests for comments on the closure. Read more about the closure here.
Saucebox, the downtown Portland restaurant owned by prominent restaurateur Bruce Carey, has closed permanently, after a lengthy temporary closure related to the coronavirus pandemic. The restaurant is the second of Carey’s to close permanently this year, a year marked not only by the difficulties of the pandemic, but also a harassment lawsuit filed against the restaurant.
“After 25 years of consistently satisfying the thirst and the appetite of thousands of loyal devotees, Saucebox is giving in to the effects of the pandemic and will not reopen,” a statement on the website reads. “We sincerely appreciate the love and support we have felt over the past couple decades from people of all varieties and backgrounds.”

Longtime downtown Portland restaurant and bar Saucebox has closed, according to a message on its website.
"After 25 years of consistently satisfying the thirst and the appetite of thousands of loyal devotees, Saucebox is giving in to the effects of the pandemic and will not reopen," the message said. "We sincerely appreciate the love and support we have felt over the past couple decades from people of all varieties and backgrounds. We know you will miss Saucebox, just as we will miss you."
The news comes after a long temporary closure of the restaurant during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Eater.
The restaurant was opened by Bruce Carey, an early innovator in drawing national recognition to Portland's food scene. Another of Carey's businesses, Bluehour in the Pearl District, closed permanently in June.
Saucebox, at 214 SW Broadway, is the latest high-profile restaurant closing in downtown Portland. Chef Vitaly Paley this week announced the closing of two of his downtown locations as the area has been depopulated by the office closings and the decline of the travel and tourism industry.
