Renee and Jay Brown while working on the 1983 Gay Pride Celebration for the Cascade Voice newspaper in various planning sessions began to think of starting their own paper which would later become Just Out [per an interview with Pat Young and Renee LaChance October 27, 2003]

History/Story:

1983 Per Pat Young’s Sept 11, 2000 draft for GLAPNtimeline October The first issue of Just Out hits the streets on October 28 with a cover story on The Dyketones.

Per the book A Curious and Peculiar People page 201, “The Northwest Fountain folded in July 1983. Renee LaChance and Jay Brown resurrected it as Just Out in October 1983, then changing hands to Marty Davis.”

  • 1991 Per Pat Young’s Sept 11, 2000 draft for GLAPNtimeline May Just Out does a cover story on Portland Police Chief Tom Potter and his daughter, Katie. The story marks Katie’s official coming out as a lesbian on the police force. Next month, The Oregonian also runs a story on the Potters and Tom marches in the Lesbian and Gay Pride parade. The OCA calls for his resignation.
