LGBTQ representation on the radio
Due in large part that major media outlets did not report news for the LGBTQ community in Oregon, notices of the community were being reported first with the publication The Fountain. The earliest article for LGBTQ on the radio was reported on page 15, The Fountain, June 1971. [BELOW LEFT] Another was when KBOO an independent radio station announced that they would be airing “Homphile Half-Hour” as stated in the October 1971 issue of The Fountain, page 26. See BELOW RIGHT middle bottom of the column, and then mentioned in the November 1971 edition of The Fountain.
A year later, reported on Page 8 – The September 1972 issue of The Fountain – NIGHT ON NIGHTLINE – radio talk show on KPOK-AM - this is just a portion of the article.[See BELOW LEFT] And, in May 1973 The Fountain page 8 had an article about “RADIO AIRS GAY SPOTS”.
BELOW LEFT, an article reported in the Northwest Gay Review, May 1974 issue page 5 under Media – “Getting on the air” discussing LGBTQ representation in broadcasting. And by June 1977 in the issue of the Northwest Gay Review, page 7 an article appeared, “Homosexuality Goes to School”
By 1986, a new radio show was on the air at KBOO “Queersville” as cited in the Jan 17, 1986 – Feb 14, 1986 issue of The City Open Press [see BELOW LEFT] Not only “Queersville”, but also cited in the Feb 20-26 1987 issue of the City Week newspaper under Community Resources “Womensoul” Weekly feminist radio program Airs 10 pm Fridays Radio Station KBOO 90.7 FM
