Genoa, the Southeast Portland restaurant, closed in 2008, rebooted in 2009, will close again for an "extended hiatus" in May, according to sommelier Michael Garofola.

First opened in 1971 by legendary Portland restaurateur Michael Vidor, Genoa offered guests a seven-course menu (originally just $7) on a once-seedy stretch of Southeast Belmont Street. Over the years, the Italian kitchen was home to a number of prominent Portland chefs, including Cathy Whims of Nostrana, Jerry Huisinga of Bar Mingo and Kevin Gibson of Davenport. The storied restaurant closed in 2008.

In 2009, former Genoa patron Patricia Eiting and one-time dishwasher turned partner Kerry DeBuse reopened the restaurant with chef David Anderson in the kitchen and Garofola managing the dining room. Accanto, a more casual sister restaurant, debuted next door.

Chef Jake Martin replaced Anderson last year.

Genoa 2.0 will close May 11.

"The opportunity to reinvent and reimagine what comes next is an exciting one," Garofola wrote in an email to Portland food media. "Whether it is a reinvention of the Genoa concept or an entirely new direction, we are committed to creating something excellent and unique."
