Founded in 1979 at 440 Castro St, Bear Hollow is one of the first bars that catered to the bear gay male subculture. After it closed, a lineage of bear gay male bars in the same location continued appealing to the bear gay subculture including Bear, Daddy and 440 Castro. Currently, 440 Castro is one of the most well—known bear/leather gay bars in San Francisco. More bear gay male bars showed up in the 1980s and 1990s throughout San Francisco. Bear Hollow seemed to the very beginning of the establishment of a prominent new gay subculture.
