  • An article in the Cascade Voice, January 4, 1983 reads, Myrna, an Old Town Legend by Renee La Chance. [this article is mostly about Sissy’s that became Angela’s]

It was strange for me to walk into a bar that had for so many years that had for so many years catered solely to the Lesbian community of Portland, a bar where men who dared to enter were made to feel most unwelcome. It was strange to find it now to be a lively, friendly bar where men and women meet to share bar where men and women meet to share in a good time. One of the first friendly faces to greet as I entered was that of Myna Carl, co-owner with her brother, Joe Powers, and the namesake of the bar. (Sissy being her childhood nickname].

A large number of people are familiar with Myrna from the years she spent tending bar at the Grand Oasis, which, only four months ago, joined the sewer system of flushed Gay bars in Portland. She started working part-time and gradually worked into tending bar full-time.

Myrna has been handling the masses at Sissy’s since it opened 18 months ago. Asked how she feels about working in a Gay bar, she said, “I enjoy the people and after seeing how some straight people act in bars. I prefer it.”

Sissy’s is nestled in the heart of the when Myna remarked that the street people in the area rarely come in. “Once in a while one will happen in and try to bum a cigarette or ask for change, but I just tell them to leave and not to try that anymore. We never have any trouble.” Sissy’s is very supportive of the Gay sports league, sponsoring two pool teams and one bowling team. Myrna participates as much as she can, “I’m the captain of one of the pool teams. I really enjoy playing. I’m a substitute for the bowling team.”

One of the members of the bowling team, Dolly Blue, is featured every Monday night in Sissy’s very own drag show. Myna said, “It’s basically Dolly’s show. She took a break for a couple of months and just recently started back. It’s real popular and Monday nights with all the people that come in.”

Recently Sissy’s has joined in the pinochle craze currently sweeping Gay Bars in Portland. It is featuring pinochle on Thursday nights.

In the past eight months Sissy’s has started serving sandwiches, chili, and other food items. With all that Sissy’s has to offer, it is a great place to relax with a cold beer and enjoy a good conversation with one of the more personable, friendly bartenders in Portland, Myna an Old Town Legend.
